Holiday travelers in New Mexico are being cautioned about dense fog and potential snowfall along Interstate 40 and surrounding routes starting Thursday night.
Christmas Day began with calm weather but dense fog in parts of eastern New Mexico, creating hazardous driving conditions for those on the road.
The National Weather Service (NWS) advises drivers to reduce speed, maintain safe distances, and use low-beam headlights while visibility remains limited.
The fog is expected to lift by mid-afternoon as temperatures climb to 52°F under mostly sunny skies.
A significant change in weather is forecast for late Thursday into Friday, with increasing cloud cover and a 20% chance of snow after midnight.
A cold front moving through the region will bring overnight lows of 28°F, transitioning rain to snow, particularly in higher elevations near the Sandia Mountains and eastern plains.
Thursday’s daytime highs near 54°F will give way to cooler conditions by Friday, with partly sunny skies and highs in the mid-40s.
Snow accumulations are expected to remain light, but icy roads could pose risks for early morning commutes and holiday travel.
The weekend promises relief from adverse conditions, with Saturday and Sunday forecast to be mostly sunny and warmer, reaching highs of 60°F.
These ideal post-Christmas conditions are expected to benefit outdoor activities and travel.
The National Weather Service urges those traveling Thursday night into Friday morning to stay updated on weather alerts and prepare for potential delays.
Drivers should pack emergency supplies, including blankets, water, and a flashlight, in case of icy road conditions.
While snow accumulations are predicted to be minimal, travelers in higher elevations and areas prone to freezing should exercise caution and plan ahead.
Stay tuned for further updates as weather patterns evolve heading into the weekend.
